Will a 2008 Fender American Deluxe Ash Stratocaster be worth more or less in 20 years?
I got it used for about one thousand dollars. I’m wondering how much it would be worth in 20 years. I definitely don’t plan on selling it though. It’s a keeper. I’m just curious.
It’s true, Fenders from the 50′s and 60′s were essentially handmade, so there were fewer and they were far higher quality. If you could afford a custom shop model, you would be getting about 75% of that quality., Maybe.
In the 70′s they started to become manufactured as opposed to handmade. CBS bought them out and the quality just sucked by comparison. Now they are almost entirely made by machine. Less than an hour of human “man hours” on even the deluxe models.
There are so many being made, I would guess the value would drop to about half for the first 10 years, and then climb back up to about the same. But with inflation, the dollar will be worth much less in 20 years, so the real value will be less.
I was a Fender repair tech for 15 years, and am not overly impressed by the current quality. I think Warmoth (USA made) is making bodies and necks that kick Fender’s a**. When I built my strat last year, I had to send 3 Fender (American) necks back because of fret or truss rod problems. Warmoth parts are WAY expensive but I found a body and neck on eBay for about $450 total for both. Easily as good as custom shop stuff. It doesn’t say “Fender” on the headstock, but it’s a better guitar.
