help replacing tubes in my guitar amp…….?
i have an old 70′s peavey tube guitar amp head with “6″ 6L6 tubes in it!!! after playing it for 20-30 mins, the volume starts to go up and down…a bad tube. what the BEST way (besides testing them), to figure out which one it is…and should i just replace them all or figure out which one it is and JUST replace that one??????
It’s best best to replace them all. You want the tubes to be matched (producing and drawing about the same amount of juice.) “unmatched” tubes cause problems.
I don’t know if Peaveys have an automatic bias adjustment or a fixed bias. If they have a fixed bias take it to a technician and have them adjust it. The bias is a setting that tells the amp how much juice to expect from the tubes. Too hot a bias and the tubes burn out prematurely. Too cold a bias and your amp sounds worse than solid state.
