I need to know all about tube amp heads.?
Anything you know will help. I bought a tube amp(b52 at100) recently and i want to be well acquainted with it. How to get a specific tone, good levels for overdrive, things like that. Good websites are also very helpful as well. Also, what does the ohms stand for?, and what tubes are for what kind of tone?
I play reggae, funk, rock, and a little bit of ska.There is lots of info on the web. Some of the legendary tube gurus are Lee Jackson, Gerald Weber, Harry Kolbe, and of course Jim Marshall.
As far as settings go…you didn’t say what style of music you play or what kind of guitars you use. Sort of a minor detail, wouldn’t you say? Just get in there and start turning some knobs! Just don’t fall into that trap of sucking all the midrange out of your sound. It’s sounds cool when you’re playing by yourself, but it’s terrible in a band setting (the drums will eat your sound alive). Plus, soundmen will usually throw things at guitar players who set their amp like that.
Ohms stands for ohms. It’s the output impedance of your amp. You should match the source (amp) impedance to the load (speaker) impedance to get the maximum power transfer and to avoid damaging your amp. NEVER run a tube amp without a speaker connected to it, or you’ll be buying a new output transformer ($$$).
Unless you can adjust the bias on your amp, don’t start putting in different types of tubes. The popular output tubes are 6550′s and EL34′s. The 6550′s stay cleaner as you get louder, and then start breaking up. EL34′s are a little darker with more midrange, and start breaking up sooner.
Overall, the best brand of tubes out there for my money are JJ Tesla (now JJ Audio) tubes. They’re manufactured in the Slovak Republic, and I haven’t found a bad one yet (and I’ve put a lot of them in amps).
I buy them through www.tubedepot.com, and they have a description of how each tube sounds there. Different brands will have slightly different sounds.
Just remember that there is no one ultimate guitar tone. As boutique amp builder Howard Dumble once said, “…there are tens of thousands of valid guitar tones out there.”.
