Can somebody recommend me a good stacked humbucker?
I want something that is in between a humbucker and a single coil tone, but leaning towards a HUMBUCKER tone. Preferably medium output. I was thinking an Air Norton S, but the output might be a little high and I need some more suggestions. No budget. It will need great, warm clean sounds and a solid lead sound.
It’s often hard to find a pickup that will sound good clean and distorted, as one usually detracts from the other. Higher output pickups can suffer a rather sterile tone where low outputs won’t distort very much at all. You generally have to sacrifice a bit. The Seymour Duncan Hot Rails are great for distortion, but they don’t sound so great clean. It’s not bad, but requires a bit of an EQ change, which can be troublesome if you only have one channel. If you’ve got a two channel amp, you should be alright. I had a Tone Zone S in a Strat and it sounded great, it cleaned up really well and distorted nicely, but it lacked the punch of the HRs. Dimarzio also makes a Chopper, Cruiser, and Fastrack single coil sized humbuckers. Bill Lawrence also makes one, but having never tried it I can’t really tell you anything. If money is no object at all, Barden’s are great pickups. But at 170 for one pickup, I think money would become an object at that point.
