Lighter string for an acoustic with a very high action?
I have a Takamine G Series Jumbo acoustic guitar. I love it, but the action on it is pretty high… a lot higher than on my Epiphone acoustic model that I played for about the last 8 years. I tend to get a little bit of fret-buzz with some barre chords. Ideally, I don’t want to lower the action, so would a lighter gauge string make the high action a little less noticeable?

The lighter the string, the less tension is required to “tune” it, thus lowering the action (slightly).
On some barre chords, are you getting “fret-buzz” or more of a “thunk” sound, like the strings aren’t being pressed hard enough? There is a huge difference.
Tune your low E down about 3 steps. Without fretting, pluck it fairly hard. It should go:
“bowwwzzzzzzzzzzzzzz”.
The “zzzzzzzzzz” is the string buzzing on the fret. Is that the same “fret-buzz” as your barre chord problem? Because lowering the action (by using lighter gauge strings) is going to give you MORE “fret-buzz”.If it’s more of a “thunk” sound, like all the notes aren’t being played, then lighter gauge strings will help. (As will making sure your thumb is braced real well on the back of the neck while doing barre chords).
