Cleaning my guitar’s fretboard?
I’m restringing my acoustic guitar now so I thought it would be a good idea to clean my fretboard. I have a Fender DG-7 and I beleive the fretboard is made out of rosewood.
I know lemon oil is what people recommend using but I don’t have lemon oil.
Tell me which of these are the best for cleaning my fretboard:
Trizol Lubricating Oil (with petroleum distillates)
WD-40
Trizor Penetrating solvent (made from castor oil)
Pledge Furniture Polish
Fantastik Heavy Duty
Lysol
WindexWhich of the above should I use? Maybe a combination of more than one?
I wouldn’t use any of those!!!
Don’t use petroleum distillates like Trizol. Bad for the wood.
WD-40 won’t clean your fretboard, it will just make your fretboard greasy.
Trizor solvent made from castor oil — ??? no idea what that is, so I would stay away from it
Fantastik, Lysol and Windex all contain ammonia which will dry out the wood. NOT a good idea.
Pledge furniture polish is at least intended to be used on wood, unlike any of the other products you’ve suggested — but it contains waxes, which will coat the wood and make it greasy.
What you want is a light, natural oil that will soak into the grain and moisturize the wood to prevent it from drying out and cracking, without leaving a greasy residue on the surface of the fretboard. This is why lemon oil is recommended. I’ve heard some well-respected guitar repairmen recommend tung oil, also, but you probably don’t have any of that on hand either.
If all else fails, and you have nothing else, I suppose you could try pure extra-virgin olive oil. Put a just a little bit on a soft cloth, rub it into the wood and then use a clean dry cloth to buff the fretboard to get as much of the oil off the surface as you can.
