Which guitar requires the least pressure on the strings to play ? Electric or acoustic? What type of string?
I ‘m a senior and have always dreamed of learning guitar.I probably have some limitations in finger strengh.Is it to late to learn?
A senior wanting to learn guitar – good on you! And you are never too old to get a lot out of it. Just be aware of the fact that it takes some dedication like anything worth pursuing and that you will have to deal with some sore finger tips for a shorter period of time (everyone does – has nothing to do with age).
Finding a guitar which suites you is essential, and you should definitely take the time to try out as many instruments as possible to get a feel for it. Bringing someone with you who can ask the right questions and test the guitars for you would be a benefit.
Like others have said, the nylon stringed guitars are easiest on your fingers. However, these guitars in general also have higher string action and wider necks. In effect, this makes them equally “hard” to master as the other guitars.
A steel string guitar (acoustic or electric) with a neck that has not too much bulk (not too thick or wide), with light strings and a great set up is what I usually recommend for anyone starting out. What is perhaps an even more important factor as far as playability goes is the scale (length of the vibrating string). A shorter scale means shorter distance between the frets and thus shorter reach, less string tension and less strain to play.
And yes, an electric guitar usually has lower string action and lighter strings. However, you have all the extra stuff that goes along with getting the most out of an electric guitar (amplifier, lead etc).
Find yourself a good acoustic with the above characteristics and you’re good to go. Do make sure you deal with a reputable dealer that can have the guitar set up (adjusted) for you. A great guitar with a good set up is a dream to play. A bad set and heavy strings up on a longer scale guitar will kill your motivation dead in its track.
